The Culture Jam

is a German-French-Moroccan-Turkish audiovisual workshop with performances in Istanbul, Weimar and Marseille with the goal of not only continuing the project in future years in Morocco and in other European and Mediterranean countries but also to expand the network of cooperating organisations, musicians and video artists. In the context of the European Capital Cities of Culture Istanbul 2010 and Marseille 2013, Schiller 05 e.V. and its partners in Weimar are interested in networking artists from European metropolises. However, cooperations with smaller culturally-important cities are also planned for places that have not yet been declared "Cultural Capitals" or are smaller, like Malta or Rabat, for example.

The project experiments with the cultural differences "jammed" together out of various mediums (Music, Video, Photography) with various genres (Pop, Punkrock, Classic, Jazz, Electronic, Chanson etc.) by artists from various European and Mediterranean nationalities in brief workshops.


The Weimar artists-collective MXZEHN brings the Bauhaus-University Weimar alumni Bahadir Hamdemir and Stefan Kraus into the project. MXZEHN is VJ-tainment for the advanced: with WJ-MX10 mixers (which is
under continuous programmatic extension by the artists) that hacks apart images and films in realtime and is able to react to musical improvisation, so that the musicians can symbiotically react to the images. This radical approach to image, structure and frequency makes the projections of MXZEHN unique and memorable.

Thematically seen, "Culture Jam" focuses on the chaos, utopia and being of the megacity. The Film "Metropolis" from Fritz Lang will be chopped up and mixed together with fotos and videos from cities in which "Culture Jam" in 2009 will take place: Marseille, Weimar, Istanbul. The Moroccan photographers and video artists Fatima Mazmouz and Fouad Maazouz will deliver the visual recordings in the respective cities. In Istanbul we are interested in the Megacity; in Weimar the differences between the classics, the architecture of fascism, the Bauhaus and the EXPO 2000 Hannover project "neues bauen am horn"; in Marseille the topic will be the chaos brought about by the absence of city planning and the multicultural mixture of the port city. The musical piece "Metropolis" by Kraftwerk will also play a central role in the context of the workshops. In 1978, the German electro avant-garde group 'Kraftwerk' released as a reference to Langs fim work a homonymously electro-acoustic music of the following decades and is still inspiring bands today. 'Kraftwerk' called themselves '(music)workers' or 'technicians' instead of musicians.

The workshop is open to all musicians at all places - as long as they want to incorporate themselves and their work in the project.

Timeline:
3-5. May 2009: three day workshop with project partner "Dogzstar" in Istanbul. Dogzstar is an independent, leading player in the music industry, dedicated to developing music audiences through its concerts, festivals, artists and albums spanning a broad spectrum of music encompassing all worldly styles from jazz to rock, world to electronic and more. Dogzstar will provide the stage and equipment and is responsible for the local publicity. Cassandra Mehlhorn, Weimar/ Istanbul, will organise and find musicians.

6.-10. July 2009: six day workshop in Weimar at E-Werk, which will conclude at the annual student exhibition of the Bauhaus-University Weimar called "Summary"  in the context of the EU sponsored project "bauhaus lab 2009" and will be presented to a broad international public composed not only of students and local artists but also international visitors to the Bauhaus Year 2009 (which is the 90th anniversary of the birth of Bauhaus). The classical city of Weimar presents itself as a young, lively, worldly, innovative and impulse-giving factory for ideas and experimentation.

Culture Jam

Deutsch-französisch-marrokanisch-türkischer audioviueller Workshop mit Performances in Istanbul, Weimar und Marseille mit der Absicht, das Projekt in den kommenden Jahren weiter zu führen und auch Workshops in Marokko und in anderen europäischen sowie mediterranen Ländern durch zu führen und das Netzwerk der kooperierenden Organisationen sowie der Musiker und Videokünstler / Fotografen zu erweitern. Auch im Hinblick auf Istanbul Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2010 und Marseille 2013, ist der Schiller 05 e.V. mit seinen Weimarer Partnern daran interessiert, die Künstler der kleinen Stadt Weimar mit Künstlern aus den Euromediterranen Metropolen zu vernetzen. Es sind aber auch Kooperationen mit kleineren Kulturstädten geplant, auch solchen, die den Kulturhauptstadt Status nicht oder noch nicht haben, wie zum Beispiel Malta.

Das Projekt experimentiert die kulturelle Verschiedenheit, indem sich verschiedene Kunstsparten: Musik, Video und Photografie mit verschiedenen Genres: Pop, Punkrock, Klassik, Jazz, Electronic, Chanson etc. mischen und indem Künstler aus verschiedenen Nationalitäten Europas und der Mediterranen Länder aufeinandertreffen, um in kurzen Workshops miteinander zu „jammen“. Die Weimarer Künstlerformation MXZEHN wird die beiden Bauhaus Universität Absolventen Bahadir Hamdemir und Stefan Kraus in das Projekt einbinden. MXZEHN ist VJ-tainment für Fortgeschrittene: mit WJ-MX10 Mischern, deren Programmierung von den Künstlern immer weiter entwickelt wird, „zerhacken“ die Videokünstler Bilder und Filme in realtime und können somit auf die Improvisationen der Musiker life reagieren, so, wie die Musiker ebenfalls life auf die Visuals eingehen können. Der radikale Umgang mit Bild, Struktur und Frequenz macht die Projektionen von MXZEHN unverwechselbar.

Thematisch wird sich „Culture Jam“ mit dem Chaos, der Utopie und dem Wesen der Großstadt auseinandersetzen. Der Film „Metropolis“ von Fritz Lang wird „zerhackt“, unter ihn werden Aufzeichnungen (Fotos und Videos) von den Städten, in denen „Culture Jam“ experimentiert wird, im Jahr 2009 Istanbul, Weimar und Marseille, gemischt. Die beiden marokkanischen Photographen und Videokünstler Fatima Mazmouz und Fouad Maazouz werden die visuellen Aufzeichnungen in den jeweiligen Städten liefern. In Istanbul wird uns die Megacity interessieren, in Weimar die architektonische Spannung zwischen Klassik, Architektur des Faschismus, Bauhaus und dem EXPO 2000 Hannover Projekt „neues bauen am horn“, in Marseille wird das Chaos der fehlenden Stadtplanung und die multikulturelle Mischung der Hafenstadt Thema. Aber auch musikalisch wird „Metropolis“ das Thema aufgegreifen. Das Musikstück der Gruppe „Kraftwerk“, „Metropolis“, steht bei dem Projekt Pate. An allen Orten ist der Workshop für alle Musiker offen, die sich dem Projekt anschließen wollen.

Ablauf:
3-5. Mai 2009: dreitägiger workshop beim Projektpartner „Dogzstar“ in Istanbul. Das Dogzstar is an independent, leading player in the music industry, dedicated to developing music audiences through its concerts, festivals, artists and albums spanning a broad spectrum of music encompassing all worldly styles from jazz to rock, world to electronic and more. Das Dogzstar stellt die Bühne und Technik, soweit vorhanden, zur Verfügung und ist für die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit zuständig. Cassandra Mehlhorn, Weimar/ Istanbul, ist bei der Organisation und der Akquise der Musiker behilflich.

6.-10. Juli 2009: fünftägiger Workshop in Weimar auf dem Gelände des E-Werks. Zum Abschluss des Bauhaus Summary (Rundgang) und im Rahmen des von der Europäischen Kommission geförderten Projekts „bauhaus lab 2009“ wird das Projekt ein breites, junges Publikum erreichen und eine überregionale Beachtung durch die Besucher des Weimarer Bauhausjahres 2009 erfahren. Die Klassikerstadt Weimar präsentiert sich laborativ als junge, lebendige, weltaufgeschlossene, innovative und Impulse stiftende Denk- und Experimentierfabrik.
